The Return Of Maplantis

Posted: Jun 16th 2009, 2:17 pm By: Excalibur

Maplantis has arisen from the depths to once again provide for the SC customs community.

For those of you who haven't followed the developments leading up to this, I'd like to take the time to explain:

After being severely fed up with some of the administrative decisions on SEN, I spoke to Yoshi about bringing back Maplantis. He didn't want to pay for it, work on it, or deal with it, he had a life and a job to worry about. On a whim, I said 'Well, what if I pay for it?', I wasn't at all serious when I first mentioned it, but the idea grew. We had often spoke of ML and all it had accomplished, and although some may have been ready to forget it, I was not one to let things lie.

After figuring out the cost and what would have to be done, I set up the ML 2.0 development forums which a few of you have visited. I invited my friends to come and discuss what sort of Maplantis we wanted to bring back, what we had liked about it and we disliked. The general consensus was that not much needed to be changed, we weren't going to try and fix something that wasn't broken. We were just going to revive that which had died.

Suffice to say many of those people do not look upon this with as much enthusiasm as they had before, indeed due to certain incidents during the development phase, some of these friends wanted no more part in the revival. I was discouraged I admit, but I was not about to condemn those who had already put time and effort in, and still wanted to see things through.

We fast forward to the fall of MM and Corbo talking about ML 2.0 on SEN, which was up until then, a rather 'secret' project, if anything on the internet can be kept a secret. I opened the development forums to the public, and continued to take stock of the opinions of ML 2.0.

There have been a lot more people who were for this project than against it, even if some of them have changed their minds by now. A lot of people have said that there isn't a place for ML anymore now that SEN is up and running, and now even less with MC catering specifically to modders.

SEN can continue to run, MC can continue to focus on modding, and the world can keep turning, but it will do so with Maplantis standing its ground and continuing the work it had done before. There is a long road ahead of us, it is not an easy one, but I am going to do everything I can to make this project a success.

One point I want to make extremely clear:

Maplantis is at all times neutral with all other sites. We do not fight with other sites, and we do not discriminate against users no matter what site they are a part of. When you register, you become a Maplantian, and that's that.

---------------------------------------------------------

So, whats new in ML 2.0?
Well, more like whats going to be new, but here's what you can expect:

-New Usergroups!
There will be a groups of four kinds: Standard (General members), Advanced (Well known, active/productive posters.), Veterans (Very well known / respected users) and Watched (Trouble makers).

Standard have all the normal shit members can do, no special options.

Advanced get more PM/upload space as well as more of a say in which direction the community goes. This means that only the people who actually matter, IE regularly use the site and contribute to it actually have a say.

Veterans are three things: Maps DB mods, Mods DB mods, and special privaledged users. They can challenge moderation so that me or some other admin has to actually look at it, they also have twice the say as an Adv in anything the community is voting on, they can recommend users for bans and suspensions. They're basically junior staff, sub-moderators, they do things that need doing by a responsible person, but are just busy-work for your average moderator.
They are hand picked on a case-by-case basis. Advanced members may petition for Veteran status by PMing me or some other admin.

Watched are members who are known for causing trouble or just being detrimental. They are are on thin ice and we will be watching them. We know where you sleep.

We will also be implementing a new skin which looks a little like this:

Syphon should have it complete in the next week or so.

Next, on to the staff:

ML 2.0 Staff:

Excalibur - Head Administrator
Syphon - Administrator
Polaris - Moderator
Phobos - Moderator

Yoshi of course will have his admin here just to help us out with stuff.

And that's pretty much everything you need to know. Enjoy the site and stay tuned.

Maplantis is back (lolololol)

Posted: Jun 16th 2009, 1:19 pm By: Yoshi

Well it's been like half a year. That news post I made below was really a cry for someone to take over coding while I finished school and other stuff. Evidently that didn't happen. Then Excalibur came to me and wanted to try running the site. He apparently has big plans for this place so I'll leave him to it.

Myself, I'm only here to upload and get it running to what maplantis previously was. I'm not coding anything new. If I actually stick around and post remains to be seen. I code a lot of latova these days so yeah.

Registrations are disabled until I get the emailing stuff working. This means you can only login if you remember your old password if you had an account here.

Maps uploading is also disabled because of the fact I have to get that working, which may take a while.

Other than that things are cool.

Coder help

Posted: Mar 20th 2008, 6:05 pm By: Yoshi

Since MA and LW don't seem to be helping me out much right now and I have a fair bit on my plate, so I'm looking for some PHP coders to give me a hand with coding the site.

You'll be dealing with the latova kernel so you should download that and have a peak at it so you know what to expect.

Send me a PM or send me an IM through aim: latovasoftware

Fomos - How was the game?
JaeDong - The graphics change to 3D made it difficult to get use to. But actually playing it I don't think much changed. It's similar to StarCraft 1 and I don't think there'll be any problems for the fans to enjoy it. If you get use to it I think it'll be very fun.

- How has zerg changed?
JD - The unit's characteristics changed. Adding new units and making them stronger, I believe if you concentrate on that the zerg will be powerful.

- The Queen was introduced.
JD - There were a few units not used in StarCraft. The Queen was an exmaple but in SC2 a lot of new abilities were added to make it better. I like the fact that there are a lot of new casters for zerg.

- Have you used the mutalisks.
JD - The mutalisks aren't much different from SC1. But the muta control has become more difficult. It's possible to clump them up as one but hitting and running control was impossible.

- How were the other units.
JD - I tried out the Nydus Worm and it creates canals while moving. It will become very useful. The zerglings were bigger so they seemed stronger. But in actuality they weren't much different. It only felt like that.

- If you play StarCraft 2.
JD - If I play StarCraft 2 (I assume they mean professionally?) I'll keep playing with zerg. In SC1 the zerg was a macro-specific race but in SC2 macro was obvious, but I think it requires more strategic and skillful techniques.

Fomos - How was the game?
Stork - I played protoss mostly and I was satisfied. The graphics were much better and I really liked the Mothership. But I think the mothership's blackhole ability was removed and she required a lot of mana so I wasn't able to test them out. The zerg became more gross and messy, but powerful.

- How's the protoss?
Stork - I didn't find it too difficult to play with protoss. The zerg felt similar to the previous game, but the buildings were a bit confusing because they looked the same.

- Do you think the fans of SC1 can easily adapt to SC2?
Stork - I think it depends on personal preference. It will probably depend on if you prefer 2D or 3D. It's probably because the game's still under development but I still like SC1 better.

- How were the new zerg units?
Stork - The Queen could be made straight from the hatchery. I didn't really understand because it was written in english, but when used correctly I think it will be a useful unit. A new unit called Roach was added and it had 90 HP. But unless you deal 90 damage to it, it will heal extremely fast to 100%. It was pretty cheap (unfair).

- The greatest difference of Protoss?
Stork - The units all look really cool. If anything changed it's that the Dark Archon was removed. Whether you morph Dark Templars or High Templars they all come out as archons. Queueing units and buildings were possible so it felt like things were easier.

- Out of the units you tried today, which did u like the most?
Stork - I tried the psionic storm but it wasn't that cool. I liked the carrier the most but it won't be easy concentrating on control. The scout and arbiters were removed.
